CENTRAL KYOKUSHIN KARATE

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

the questions everybody asks

What is Central Kyokushin Karate?

Central Kyokushin Karate (CKK) is a traditional, full-contact Kyokushin karate dojo dedicated to building discipline, resilience, strength, and character through rigorous training.

Our philosophy is simple: Train Hard. Live Strong.

CKK emphasizes technical excellence, physical conditioning, mental toughness, and personal growth.

What style of karate do you teach?

We teach Kyokushin, one of the most respected full-contact karate systems in the world.

Kyokushin is known for:

-Full-contact sparring

-Strong fundamentals

-Powerful kata

-Effective self defense

-Physical and mental conditioning

-Character development

It is challenging - and transformative.

Who can train at CKK?

CKK welcomes:

-Children (beginner and advanced)

-Teens

-Adults

-Families

-Competitive athletes

-Individuals seeking personal growth

You do not need prior experience to begin. Beginners are guided step-by-step.

Do I need to be in shape before starting?

No. Karate training will help you get in shape. We scale intensity appropriately based on experience and fitness level. Consistency matters more than starting ability.

What should I expect in a typical class?

A standard CKK class includes:

-Bow-in and dojo etiquette

-Warm-up and conditioning

-Kihon (basics)

-Kata (forms)

-Kumite (sparring drills)

-Conditioning and cool down

Classes are structured, disciplined, and high energy.

Is Kyokushin full contact?

Yes. Kyokushin is a full-contact style. However:

-Beginners progress gradually

-Safety is prioritized

-Protective gear is used when appropriate

-Contact level is scaled to experience

Students develop resilience safely and progressively.

How does belt ranking work?

Progress is earned, not given. Nobody here is promoted on a schedule or to keep them happy - rank reflects demonstrated skill, knowledge, effort, and attitude.

If you want a place where every belt is handed out for showing up, we're the wrong dojo, and we'd rather tell you up front.

What equipment do I need?

To start: nothing. A t-shirt, something you can move in, and bare feet. You don't need a uniform or gear to try classes or during your first weeks.

Once you decide to stay, uniforms and protective equipment (sparring gloves, shin guards, mouthguard, groin/chest protection) are purchased through CKK. This isn't a sales policy; it's a safety one. You will be hit while wearing this gear, and we confirm it meets the standard we train to.

Already own equipment? Bring it in and a senior instructor will approve it or tell you honestly why it won't.

Can parents watch classes?

Yes. We encourage parents to observe, support, and understand the training process.

How often should I train?

We train Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings:

-Adults: Tue/Thu 6:30–8:00 PM and Sat 10:30 AM–12:30 PM

-Youth: Tue/Thu 5:30–6:30 PM

Tuition covers every class on the schedule; train once a week or five times, the price is the same. Beginners do well with 2–3 classes a week; consistency matters more than volume. Family rates apply if more than one of you trains.

Do you offer private lessons?

Sometimes, depending on circumstances. Private training is based on instructor availability and may be helpful for:

-Skill acceleration

-Tournament preparation

-Conditioning improvement

-Focused technical refinement

Do you compete in tournaments?

Yes. CKK students may compete in:

-Kata (forms)

-Kumite (sparring)

-Combined divisions

Competition is encouraged but not required.

What values does CKK emphasize?

CKK is built on:

-Discipline

-Respect

-Perseverance

-Humility

-Integrity

-Service

We develop martial artists — and strong, well-rounded, service-focused human beings.

How do I get started?

1. Come watch a class, or jump straight in - your first class is free.

2. No sales pitch, no obligation.

3. Decide for yourself, then keep showing up.

The hardest step is walking through the door.
